I am the author of BENEDICTION AT THE SAVOIA, a novel, and the memoir THE BOOK OF KEHLS. Both received starred reviews in KIRKUS REVIEWS, the a KIRKUS Best Book selection of 2005.

My essays have appeared in BETWEEN FRIENDS, THE DAY MY FATHER DIED, LIVES THROUGH LITERATURE, THE FACTS on FILE COMPANION to the AMERICAN NOVEL, EXPLORING LITERATURE, QUEST MAGAZINE, FOR KEEPS, THE FACE IN THE MIRROR, HE SAID WHAT?, PLOUGHSHARES, the SUN, THE STORY WITHIN: PERSONAL ESSAYS on GENETICS AND IDENTITY, EXIT LAUGHING, FAITH: ESSAYS FROM BELIEVERS, AGNOSTICS, and ATHEISTS, SHADES OF BLUE.

I received the Jerry Lewis Writing Award, and was named a "Top Irish American" by Irish America Magazine. I am a former writing instructor at Hofstra University and a frequent "visiting author" at UCLA's on-line writing program.

I've contributed essays to the NEW YORK TIMES, NEWSDAY, and several Long Island publications.

I live on Long Island with my family and am working on a second memoir.
